How To Use A Fire Extinguisher: A Step-By-Step Guide

Learning how to use a fire extinguisher can save lives, property, and prevent damage caused by fire. Fires can occur at any time and in any place, so it’s important to know how to properly use a fire extinguisher to control and extinguish small fires before they become bigger and out of control. Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher can also help people remain calm and confident during a fire emergency, potentially saving lives and preventing panic.

To extinguish the fire, one must know about it to use it. Fire can ignite in almost any space with the presence of the following three elements, that is heat, oxygen, and fuel. These three elements together make a fire triangle. Fire needs three elements in the fire triangle to sustain and cause damage. It needs oxygen and heat for ignition and fuel for combustion. All these cause a reaction called an exothermic chain reaction, including this a fire tetrahedron forms.

Different fuel sources cause different types of fires, which require different extinguishing agents to put out that particular fire. These agents include Foam, Water, Carbon Dioxide, Dry Chemical Powder, Wet Chemicals etc. Although all these agents are different yet the process of using a fire extinguisher is the same. With the correct extinguisher understanding, any small fire is tackled.

This process works in four simple steps. With the acronym PASS. PASS stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.

  • Pull: The fire extinguisher contains a pin at the top of its head. Sometimes there is a latch, it may vary from design to design. Remove the pin to break open the seal.
  • Aim: Next, aim the nozzle/hose of your fire extinguisher towards the fire. Keep in mind to aim at the bottom of the fire and not at the flames. Fire extinguishes when the base is the target, not the flames.
  • Squeeze: Next in the process is to squeeze the handles of your fire extinguisher and release the extinguishing agent.
  • Sweep: Last on this list is to keep swinging from left to right in a sweeping motion to capture most of the base of the fire.

When a fire appears to be vanishing, look for the areas carefully and examine each surface. If necessary, use a fire extinguisher again until it is under control. A typical fire extinguisher contains 10 seconds of extinguishing power.

Fire extinguishers are made to deal with the fire at an early age when it is just getting started. So if the fire is still burning, step aside, move out and call the professionals. Fires increase double in size in mere 60 seconds, so be smart, be cautious and protect yourself and your near and dear ones.
